Juniper MX-series

Overview
Leveraging JUNOS software, the MX-series offers a seamless, cost-effective way to deploy Ethernet. Our portfolio of MX-series line cards provides flexibility of choice for fiber optic and copper interfaces that scale from 20 Gbps to 40 Gbps per card.
The MX960 platform is the industry's largest-capacity carrier Ethernet platform, with up to 960 gigabits per second (Gbps) of switching and routing capacity. It reduces costs, enables more revenue per platform, and can scale to protect customers' investments. Offering efficient support of high-density interfaces and high-capacity switching throughput, the MX960 supports a wide range of business and residential applications and services, including high-speed transport and VPN services, next-generation broadband multiplay services, and high-volume Internet data center internetworking.
Purpose-built for the most demanding carrier applications, the MX-series establishes a new industry standard for carrier Ethernet capacity, density, and performance. The best-in-class hardware platform coupled with the reliability and service flexibility of JUNOS software delivers a combination of features and capabilities previously unattainable.

Features

Our carrier Ethernet portfolio is designed to meet the sophisticated requirements of advanced services and applications such as IPTV, VoIP, and VPLS.
The portfolio offers:

Performance at Scale

New Dense Port Concentrators (DPC) cards, available on the MX-series, combine a wide range of port densities and interface types with a distributed architecture and onboard processing to ensure that performance scales with the addition of interfaces.

Advanced Quality of Service

The MX-series features superior quality of service (QoS) at the interface level and per VLAN, so you can ensure services receive the appropriate level of quality regardless of traffic conditions. This advanced capability allows you to offer a variety of Layer 2 and Layer 3 services — such as VLAN/transparent LAN, L2/L3 VPNs, Voice over IP and Video over IP -over Ethernet, with the ability to provide guaranteed SLAs.

Service Flexibility

Juniper is an industry leader in both IP/MPLS and VPLS. Our carrier Ethernet portfolio leverages JUNOS software, which powers more than 27,000 Juniper M- and T-series routers currently deployed in hundreds of service provider networks worldwide. JUNOS software gives the MX-series feature richness, stability, and service breadth not typically found in carrier Ethernet platforms.

Simple, Non-disruptive Deployment

Utilizing JUNOS software, Juniper's carrier Ethernet portfolio allows service providers to immediately take advantage of the latest Ethernet technology without the cost and risks of a new network operating system. A customer's familiarity, knowledge and integration of JUNOS software in existing back-office systems can drive down capital expenditures while allowing rapid roll out of Ethernet-access networks and services.
Building upon these customer requirements, the MX960 provides up to twelve 40 Gbps slots in a single chassis and supports Juniper's new DPC cards, allowing customers to take advantage of unprecedented port density — up to 480 Gigabit Ethernet ports and 48 ports of 10 Gigabit Ethernet per system.
The distributed intelligence and packet processing of the MX-series and DPC cards are powered by the I-chip, Juniper's next-generation packet forwarding engine technology. By increasing scalability and packet performance and enhancing Ethernet-centric quality of service features, the MX-series allows you to increase the number of services and customers supported per platform without negatively impacting performance. This increases service flexibility and can also drive down both capital and operational expenses.

Modules

DPCs

Dense Port Concentrators (DPCs) provide multiple physical interfaces and Packet Forwarding Engines on a single board that installs in a slot in the Juniper Networks MX-series Ethernet services routers. A DPC receives incoming packets from the network and sends outgoing packets to the network. The Packet Forwarding Engines on a DPC are equipped with purpose-built application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) that perform packet processing and forwarding. Each Packet Forwarding Engine consists of one I-chip for Layer 3 processing and one Layer 2 network processor.
The MX-series Ethernet services routers have a wide range of DPCs that provide connectivity for copper and fiber optic interfaces. The interfaces on DPCs range in speed from 10 Mb to 10 Gbps. There are three models of Dense Port Concentrators: DPCE-R, DPCE-X, and DPCE-EQ.

DPCE-X

The DCPE-X extends JUNOS software to include traditional Layer 2 switching features, such as Spanning Tree, as well as more recent Ethernet standards developments including Operation, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM). The MX-series combined with the DPCE-X Layer 2 switching cards provide a wide range of MPLS and Ethernet functionality for cost-effective Layer 2 aggregation.
The DPCE-X cards are designed specifically for applications that include:
  • Distributed and centralized Central Office (CO) Ethernet aggregation: DPCE-X cards can be used for pure Layer 2 Ethernet aggregation, for VLAN-based services with the ability to enable higher-value Layer 2 and VPLS and inter-autonomous system (AS) VPLS at no incremental cost.
  • Metro Ethernet aggregation: DPCE-X cards can be used as a combined Layer 2 and Layer 2.5 aggregation switch with MPLS control plane functionality to push such advanced capabilities further into the metro networks.

DPC-R and DPCE-R

In addition to the Layer 2 switching and MPLS features offered on the DPCE-X cards, the DPCE-R cards provide a greater level of routing scalability (1 million routes versus 32 K) and packet processing capabilities.

DPCE-EQ

The DPCE-EQ cards provide enhanced queuing capabilities with support of up to 64,000 individual queues.
  • 4 level hierarchical WRR
  • 4 levels of per-VLAN queue priority
  • Priority propagation
  • Drop Statistics Per <VLAN, Color, Queue>
  • Changeable allocation of schedulers per port (8,000 scheduler nodes with 8 queues each or 16,000 nodes with 4 queues each)
